Universal Remote Controls
|
|
This section of my site was created primarily to share my search for the ultimate
learning universal remote control and to share the information gathered along
the way. I will be focusing on the RTI T2 Theater Touch, Philips Pronto, and
Universal MX-500 remotes.

I have not been updating much lately, there are many new remotes out
there that look really interesting. I have not been trying any of
these new technologically advanced remotes. The touch screen remotes
seem to have addressed many of the issues I had with them, notably the
addition of more hard keys.
-
I ended up ordering an MX-850 remote a while ago. I upgraded primarily
to get the programability features. Other than upload/download capabilities
the MX-850 has RF features and an extra hard button that I found very useful.
I love it and have been very pleased with it.
-
The MX-500 ended up getting trashed, it worked beutifully till I upgraded.
Then I let it sit unused long enough for the batteries to leak and trash
the remote. I was sad about that because I really wanted to pass it along
to someone who could use it...it was still a great remote.

Holy cow! It has been quite some time since my last update.
I am in the "Happily Ever After" phase of the fairy tale. I am
still very satisfied with my MX-500 and find myself loving it more
as time passes. I am definately a button man, but the lesser used
functions really need descriptions because I would never remember
which button does what. That is why the MX-500 is the near perfect
remote for me. It has filled that empty void in my heart that longs
for remote control bliss. I am a very happy man and expect to remain
satisfied for quite some time to come.

7-31-2001 ProntoPro Update

I am officially an adict. :) I have been reading about the ProntoPro quite a bit
over at www.remotecentral.com and I find myself wishing I had one. The darn thing
just looks like it is so much fun to play with. Daniels review certainly did not help
matters and the awesome screenshots showing the benifits of the color screen are sweet.
I definately suggest heading over there and reading his review.
-
I definately have an accute case of remote envy. I am tempted to pick one up, the addition
of two more hard buttons might be just what the doctor ordered for making the ProntoPro more
useable with the TiVo than the older Pronto. I have seen a few neat TiVo tricks on the Pronto
that I think would translate well to the ProntoPro, but I think I am going to resist the urge
to go buy one. It is a little pricy at $1000, to high for me to gamble on a possibility.

I have added my MX-500 review. The bottom line is that I like it and feel
that it will replace my other remotes, mostly because it is so perfect for
controlling a TiVo.

I just placed my order for the MX-500 remote. I am very anxious to get the new remote
and see how it compares to the RTI T2 in my daily use. I will probably add a review and
some details about how it goes at some point, I would say soon but I have learned my lesson.
Whenever I say I am going to do something "soon" it ends up taking far longer than expected. lol.
I am really excited and can't wait to program up the new remote!

I have not been the site much lately as my remote has not needed much tweaking. I
decided to combine the Pronto and RTI T2 Theater Touch pages into one section that is
a little more generic. I am thinking pretty hard about switching to and MX-500 remote,
the layout of that remote's hard buttons look awesome. TiVo recently changed it's UI making
the transport keys more important that before. This makes it more difficult to come up with
a RTI T2 layout that provides easy access to the transport controls, thus making the MX-500
more attractive.

I installed the new screen and added a new section in the Pronto Ravings area that has more
information and some pictures of the upgrade process and Pronto internals. The procedure
pretty much worked. The install went flawlessly, but the end result is a little disapointing.
I have some grey lines near the right and left edges of the screen, the good news is the backlight
works. I am making a guess that the problem stems from the fact that I received the wrong revision
of the LCD screen. I got a Rev A instead of a Rev G, and at least one other person has seen similar
results. I don't know what I will do about it, if anything, but I figured the pictures and procedure
was still kind of interesting.

I have added my review of the remote to the site. I really like the
T2 and am very happy with how this has all worked out.
-
When I made my full configuration I started by making seperate files
for each component. I merged these layouts together to form my complete
.rti file. I have also created custom IR libraries for some of my
components. I have made those available if anyone wants to use them.

I have spent a few days programming and using my new Theater Touch
T2 remote, and I really like it so far. I loved the Pronto so much
I did not think any remote would ever be able to take it's place.
The T2 has done an admirable job filling the void, and is much cooler
than I thought it would be.
-
The primary reason I wanted the T2 was because I wanted a universal
remote that could handle the everyday use of all my components. The
Pronto could do that, but controlling a TiVo with it is a pain because
of all the menu navigation. The T2 handles this task exceptionally well.
