I am very hard on remotes, I dropped my Pronto way more times than I care to admit. It survived all the
dropping without any ill effects, I would put in the batteries and wham it would come back to life. I did
need to hit reset on occasion, but that was the extent of my droppage problems. That is until 8-26-2000 when
I dropped my Pronto onto a concrete floor for the umpteenth time. This time the remote did not fully recover,
the backlight no longer functioned.
I was not happy, but I did not think I looked at the screen much anyways so I did not worry too much. I then found out how often I look at the screen. I watch most TV with the lights too low to see the Pronto and that led me to the belief that my Pronto was for all intents and purposes DOA. I had been looking at the RTI Theater Touch T2 remote for a while anyway, this just made the decision easy. I picked up the T2 and I love the combo of hard buttons AND a touch screen. I would not personally switch back to the Pronto, but I still love the Pronto and hated to see my Pronto dead. I figured I should check and see if there is just something loose so I read Tom Held's "opening the case" description (thanks Tom!) and ordered a #6 Torx screwdriver. After I got the Pronto open I found what was causing my problems. A small component was broken from the circuit board attached to the back of the touch screen. I knew that I could not repair the damage because I am horrible with a soldering iron. I was reading the ever helpful Remote Central when I came upon a post from Aaron Macpherson that spoke about installing a replacement screen to correct the backlight problem. I ordered a screen and eventually got around to installing it. It turns out that I got the wrong version of the screen I needed a UG24U01WGHT3G and I got UG24U01WGHT3A instead. The end result was 2-4 grey vertical lines along the right and left edges of the screen. Other than that the procedure was a success. Here are some pictures of the upgrade process.
