I really hate it when the television networks display thier station logo on the screen during
a TV show. This should have been nipped in the bud when it first started happening, but the
public failed to respond. The logo's or "bugs" started out transparent and almost like
watermarks, they were not so obtrusive that you felt the need to complain. They eventually
started running them more often. Then more stations picked up the concept and some of them even
made thier logo's solid. This happened over time and they have been makeing them biger and more
obnoxious ever since.
I am offended by opaque bugs, they obscure the TV show and have the ability to cause burn in on my rear projection TV if I leave that channel on screen for too long. I would think they are illegal and that the FCC should be all over them. I have always thought the FCC rules prohibited anything being broadcast that can damage the TV viewing equipment, I guess I was misstaken. I get angry enough when I see a solid bug that I try to avoid that channel as much as possible, not that it really matters. I know what you are thinking, that I am being foolish and they are not that big a deal. I tend to agree with that when we are talking about transparent bugs. I feel that opaque or animated bugs are too distracting and really suck. I can deal with that, even though I don't like it. The question becomes what are they going to pull next now that we have let them force all this crap on us? The answer is almost to horrible to describe. I was watching a movie on the TNT network and thier transparent logo apeared in the lower right corner. It got in the way of some of the action, but I did not get overly upset. Then it happened. They displayed a damm comercial in that spot while the movie was playing! That crosses the line and pisses me off to the point where I want to try and do something about it. They were advertising a show called "The Pretender", which is a show I really like. They displayed the shows logo and had some text apear that said when the next episode would be aired. I was so distracted by it that I missed part of the movie. I was in awe by the disrespect they were showing to not only me, but the makers of the movie they were hacking up. It was almost as if they were saying "the show you are watching sucks, but don't worry, we will have a good show for you later". It was a TNT original movie that they disrupted, but it is only a small step from that to pulling that crap during a normal show or movie. In fact I have seen it happen on other stations and shows before too, so this is not an issue limited to TNT so I don't want to single them out. I had an episode of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer taped from the midwest that a storm warning like text scroll announcing the episode they would be playing next week. I love watching buffy so I was really ticked off that they would kill the mood of scene with a stupid message. I could easily see this becoming a trend if the television networks do not get any negitive feedback about this issue. Who knows where things would go after this becomes standard operating procedure, perhaps we will be stuck with no shows and only comercials. It is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid advertisments and it is quickly coming to the point where if society at large does not do something to correct the situation we will be stuck with it for a long long time. I do not have any ideas for a solution, I really wish I did. This is like falling off a bridge where you see the end coming but can't do anything to prevent it. I thought about not watching the Pretender, but that felt too much like cutting off my nose to spite my face. I also figured that since I do not affect the ratings that if I watch it or not does not really affect anyone but me. If anyone has some ideas I would love to hear them.
